Slow the Game Down

Slow the Game Down

Volleyball is not a contact sport like basketball or football. In both of those sports, the opponent can impact how you play by jumping in front of the ball, knocking you off balance, or even tackling you.

Fortunately, there is no tackling in volleyball, but there is also no way for the opponent to come on your side of the net and impact what you are doing. That means that they can only impact you from their side of the net with tough serves, hits, shots, etc. So, if you pass the ball well, you can play at the pace that you want to play at, which should be slow and under control.

This doesn't mean that you can't run a faster offense, but it does mean that you shouldn't feel sped up and out of control when you attack. Your goal as a volleyball player should be to really slow down the game for yourself and your team and then, in return, look to speed up the other team and get them out of system.

So, as you play, really look to slow down and stay relaxed. Focus on one thing at a time. A good pass leads to a good set, and a good set leads to a high-percentage attack. The more you can slow the game down into these manageable areas, the more you will feel in control and ready to play your best.
